In Philip Roth's highly successful alternative history novel published in 2004, the political and social landscape of a United States full of tensions is revealed before us, where Franklin D. Roosevelt loses the 1940 election. His place is taken by Charles A. Lindbergh, who was radically opposed to intervention in the European war - the world-famous pilot, the national hero of the Americans... and a sympathizer of Nazi ideals. Soon after the inauguration of the new president, he makes an agreement with the Führer, guaranteeing America's "neutrality", and under his administration, the shadow of Hitler's terror increasingly covers the United States. Targeted deportations are launched against American Jews who live in increasing fear, the fascist-anti-Semitic words of the political public discourse seep into everyday life through the medium of propaganda, and eventually lead to bloody riots...
